Together with EduMais and Games for Health, we set up a summer school in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. The aim was to give children a safe and inspiring place during the long summer break. We introduced courses in game design, development, art and marketing. My role was to train local teachers, so they could continue the program independently. Industry experts joined online sessions, giving students direct insight into the daily work of game developers.
In the year after, we took the new teachers along digitally to international game conferences. They shared their experiences and learned from a global community, which boosted their confidence and network. After two years of close involvement, the project continued without us. Since 2020 the summer school has been running every year, activating young people to create games and opening up new futures.
