Gaymover

For my graduation project at HKU, I developed what was likely the first gay protest game in the world. The player walks through endless streets and is constantly confronted with insults.

If you do nothing, the words hit you directly. They drain your energy and damage your self-image. To resist, you can fight back. By striking the words, you shatter them. This costs energy, but it also strengthens your sense of self.

The game creates a balance between choices. Fighting is sometimes harder, depending on the situation. Environments shift from cold indifference to irritation, envy, and anger. You can also choose to avoid the words. Dodging saves energy but does little for your self-image. Every moment asks which fight you want to take on.

The entire game was hand-drawn and later digitised into animation. The result is a personal and expressive protest piece, turning play into a reflection on identity, resilience, and the daily struggle against hostility.
